Many people enjoy walking along the beach in the summer to look for seashells. Those with iridescent mother of pearl (also known as nacre) inside are especially valuable. But many beachgoers would be surprised to learn that shiny nacre is one of the strongest and most durable materials in nature! We take ideas from its impressive structure to make protective coatings with mineral layers that interlock like nacre and are made to protect our built cultural heritage.
